My curiosity has gotten the better of me as I’m watching some of the talks from this year’s JuliaCon. What on Earth is happening in the background? Why the large dirt stadium? etc. Great presentations and event organization nonetheless.
There apparently was a concert held in the stadium before Juliacon so they were re-surfacing the entire field before the season started. The reason for holding it in a stadium at all is that once you have more than a few hundred people, your options are pretty much stadia or conference hotels, and the hotels are a ton more expensive.

Makes sense! I’m here for the day we’ll have Julia talks opening for sporting events.
Now before we get to the FIFA world cup, we’ll learn a quick bit about abstracting GPU kernels in Julia.
