JuliaCon Global 2025 videos will start releasing today

JuliaCon Global 2025 videos will start releasing today (September 17) on a rolling basis. Videos will be uploaded in large batches as unlisted over the next ~week (due to API rate limits). At the time of upload the video URL will be added to PreTalx as a resource of the submission. This link will be on the public facing page and should remain stable , so you may use that link to share the video etc.

Videos will be released or made public at a rate of ~3-4 videos per day. This allows The Algorithm to give everyone’s talk a fair shot, avoids spamming ~250 videos at everyone’s subscriber feed, and generates much more interest in each project than one massive premiere.

Please bear in mind there may be technical issues along the way, we thank you for your patience.

FAQ

FAQ:

  1. What are the video thumbnail backgrounds and why are there three different versions? These are thumbnails generated by Cormullion and have no other meaning. If your video has a red thumbnail instead of a blue one it simply means the random number generator rolled a 1 instead of a 3!
  2. Can I upload a custom thumbnail? We discussed doing this last year and it’s a project I very much want to allow in the future, unfortunately for bandwidth reasons (and the difficulty in doing this after the conference) we couldn’t do it this year. This is something I hope to work with the Global 2026 team on as part of the CfP process. As I’m sure you all know custom thumbnails are a big deal for The Algorithm™
  3. My video isn’t uploaded yet? If you don’t see a video link on your submission (on PreTalx) within the next 14 days please email raye@julialang.org.
  4. My video isn’t public yet? Videos will be made public on a relatively slow rolling basis for the reasons mentioned above, this process is mostly random.
  5. There were no videos made public today? If there is a gap in videos being premiered or made public it is likely due to a cron job error. Unfortunately we cannot schedule videos for premiere with YouTube which are unlisted, so instead I am running a cron job on an old MacMini. I will try to keep an eye out for this
  6. Why does it take 2 months to upload videos? Professional editing takes time, as does cleanup on our side by volunteers, we have no dedicated AV team or chair. Eduroam at this location is quite slow, and splitting videos is a time-consuming process. If you’d like to help out with AV next year for JuliaCon Global 2026 Mainz please let us know! We’d love your help
  7. Why are there ads on my talk? YouTube inserts ads regardless of any settings we can change. We do, however, have the videos set up for monetization which helps ameliorate a very small amount of the costs of the conference. We have no control over the content, except that we have tried to disallow all ads which may be considered harmful or unfriendly
  8. Who did the recordings? James Ferris and his lovely team at https://www.massivepgh.com/
  9. My name/talk title is misspelled in a thumbnail, title or description, or there is a missing character?! Please reach out to me on Slack or at raye@julialang.org. My sincere apologies fonts are hard!

Where are videos uploaded? To our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@TheJuliaLanguage/

Thank you all for a wonderful JuliaCon 2025 Global Pittsburgh, I hope you will all tune into JuliaCon 2025 Local Paris for more amazing talks and keep up your amazing contributions to the Julia ecosystem, community, and spirit.

FAQ item 10. (Which should maybe not have been hidden.)

Thanks for this, I always look forward to have individual videos of the talks because it’s way more convenient for me to select and create a watch list than navigating the planning and lives…

If possible, Please release conference videos such that slides occupy maximum possible space on screen so that content is clearly visible. Sometimes i find difficult to read content on my 16-inch laptop.

This is more an issue for the presenters themselves than for the videos. Some presenters use text sizes and graphics that are readable on good quality displays and live projection but suffer under video compression and after downloading.
