Since I am french, I’m think about going to JuliaCon Local Paris 2025, since it would be pretty easy and cheap for me to attend.
However, I don’t have much of a programmation background and I am just starting with Julia. Thus, I am wondering if the JuliaCon would be interesting for “beginner” like me or if the talks would just go over my head and I would understand anything…
I know saying “beginner” is very vague. So maybe could someone instead describe in what way a JuliaCon is interesting for newcomers and/or at what level and expectations should one start to think about the Con ?
I might be very biased, since I go to conferences already for a while and also have been to the Chaos Communication Congress for a few times.
To me the JuliaCon is exactly a mix of those two. A lot of interesting presentations and talks, but also very interesting people and discussions as well as a great atmosphere.
For the JuliaCon last year, my first physical one, they had a mentor/mentee program for people that feel new or attend alone for the first time. Though I was a first time attendee, I am hanging out here for a while already, so I became a mentor.
I would split the answer into two parts: Giving a talk at a (local) JuliaCon is maybe something that takes a while … but attending is something you should consider when you are interested in topics around Julia and want to see people.
Don’t worry about the topics, some will be on a level that is for everyone, some are on levels that are super-nerdy, so I am sure there is also talks for you included.
PS: Only saw that after writing: Welcome to Julia discourse
Thank you very much for your warm welcome and your kind answer !
I will then definitely consider going to the Con in Paris. Plus I’m currently working on my first package project so I might get significantly better by next October.
Side note : You made me discover the Choas Communication Congress which seems amazing and I am thankful for that
I’m the organizer of JuliaCon Paris 2025 and I can tell you for sure that you’re welcome to attend!
JuliaCon reviewers try to ensure that accepted talks are interesting for many members of the community, including beginners. This is even more true for our local event, because we will only have two parallel tracks: there will be fewer options to choose from than at JuliaCon Global, so each talk must cater to a diverse audience.
Unlike Ronny, I would actually recommend submitting a small proposition, maybe a poster or a lightning talk. The worst that can happen is that you get rejected, and even then, the reviewer comments can help you improve for next time! But you could also get accepted, in which case it’s one more opportunity to discuss cool things with cool people
Nice! And I agree with @gdalle, if you are working on a project, and feel it is worth a poster, to submit that, for exactly the reasons Guillaume states.
