GSOC 2017: NumFOCUS will be an umbrella organization

Hi

Organizations can start submitting applications for Google Summer of Code
2017 on January 19 (and the deadline is February 9)

NumFOCUS will be applying again this year. If you want to work with us
please let me know and if you apply as an organization yourself or under a
different umbrella organization please tell me as well. If you participate
with us it would be great if you start to add possible projects to the
ideas page on github soon. We some general information for mentors on
github.

# Contributing Guide for Mentors and Sub Orgs
## Organizations Eligible Under NumFOCUS Umbrella

To be eligible to participate in GSoC under the NumFOCUS umbrella, an
organization must have:

1. One sub-org admin
   and at least two mentors (**the sub-org admin can be one of the mentors**)
   who are willing to commit for the full GSoC period.
2. NumFOCUS [Fiscally Sponsored][sponsored] or [Affiliated][affiliated] status
3. Have a good ideas page (**NumFOCUS Admins will help with that**).

The sub org administrator has the responsibility to communicate with
NumFOCUS and advertise GSoC to the community of their organization.

You can sign up as a participating org with us until the application deadline for
the current year or up to 3 days after Google announces that NumFOCUS is
participating as a umbrella org.

When you sign up with us you should also tell us your preferred way for students

In case you participated in earlier years with NumFOCUS there are some
small changes this year. Raniere won’t be the admin this year. Instead I’m
going to be the admin. We are also planning to include two explicit rules
when a student should be failed, they have to communicate regularly and
commit code into your development branch at the end of the summer.

I can’t find out how to register as a mentor. Is the link on the GSoC homepage still there? (It seems some of the materials may be out of date!)

You can’t register as a mentor currently. Organizations apply from the 19 of January. Mentors can register after the accepted organizations have been announced.

Hi Max, great to hear that NumFocus will be umbrella-ing this year. Julia will apply as a separate project as we have in previous years. Thanks for the useful links also – perhaps it’s a good idea to have templates of some sort for our own projects.

Is there anything we should do in this case, with regard to NumFocus?

Just one thing. Please tell me where your project ideas are so that I
can also link to them on our website. That would be great so people
interesting in NumFOCUS projects know how to apply to all of them.
