Hi all,
I’m one of the co-organizers of the Detroit Tech Watch conference. We also do a monthly meetup and we’d love to have someone join us to give some an introduction to Julia. We’re looking for a May speaker (last Tuesday of May) or July or any month thereafter.
Given the current state of things, we would be happy to host someone virtually. If you’re interested, please reply to this message or contact me directly at catenacci@ieee.org.

Can you tell us a little more about the audience?
- Are these folks who have programming experience?
- Is there a particular area that would be better to focus on (data wrangling, machine learning, etc.)?
- Anything else that may be useful…

Thanks for asking!
The meetup is for experienced software developers. We generally tend to draw folks who are interested in hearing about new technologies and new ideas so a focus on ML might be a great topic.
If it helps you (or anyone else) to decide, several of us like Elixir, a few like Elm and I think most of us are interested in FP.
Please don’t hesitate to ask if I can provide more detail!
That’s great to have Julia in there, and @mthelm85 seems to have expressed interest, as may others.
Just in case there is nobody confirmed for any reason as you get close to the event, please do contact me and I’ll be happy to speak myself or arrange for someone else.

I have experience introducing Julia to more of a beginner crowd but I certainly don’t have the credentials to present to this kind of crowd.
In case you don’t know, @viralbshah is a co-creator of the Julia language so to have him speak would be kind of a big deal (and I personally would enjoy attending the event if you are able to share a link)

I wanted to say a great big “Thank You” to @rdeits for an awesome presentation on Tuesday evening. We got a lot of compliments about what an enjoyable talk he gave and it certainly inspired some interest in looking further into Julia!

did the talk get recorded, or put up as a video somewhere public?

I know it got recorded but I haven’t seen the link from the folks who hosted yet. As soon as I get a link I’ll post it here.

Just watched it. Great talk @rdeits !! You’ve communicated very clearly a number of things I love about Julia, and some of the sticking points that users should be aware of. I will definitely be sharing this video with people I’m introducing to Julia
