Idea: Mapping Dive Sites with Julia – A Chance to Show Off the Ecosystem

Hi all,

I’ve been thinking about a practical and visually engaging way to highlight what Julia can do -especially when it comes to its growing ecosystem of packages.

All over the world, some diving spots are described using rough sketches and words. They’re rarely mapped with real data, and almost never visualized in a dynamic or interactive way. But Julia is actually very well suited for this kind of work.

The idea: build underwater maps of dive sites, including bathymetry, depth contours, and suggested dive routes. Also one can draw routes interactively. It’s useful for divers and marine researchers—but also a great showcase for how Julia can handle geospatial data, visualization, and scientific mapping.

Beyond just the end result, the goal is to make Julia and its a packages more visible. A focused open source project like this could demonstrate real, applied use cases—something people outside the Julia community can relate to.

In essence, it could be a promotional project for Julia and its ecosystem. Sadly it’s not my sphere of expertise.

It sounds cool, but it’s highly unlikely to get done unless you start by doing a majority of the work yourself. People seldom jump head first into massive undertakings because someone online suggests doing it.
