Does allocating almost 3GB in the first code make sense?
Oh, 18x18 is larger than I first thought. An (somewhat arbitrary) size were it still makes sense is 10x10.

I think so. There are a lot of allocations of big matrices (18x18, 18x6) happening 60,000x.
