Julia v1.5.4 and v1.6.0-rc2 have been released

The Julia developers are pleased to announce two new releases: v1.5.4, the fourth patch release for Julia 1.5, and v1.6.0-rc2, the second release candidate for Julia 1.6. You can download binaries at https://julialang.org/downloads for macOS, FreeBSD (x86-64), Windows (32-, 64-bit), glibc Linux (i686, x86-64, AArch64, PowerPC), and musl Linux (x86-64).

As a patch release, 1.5.4 contains no new features or breaking changes, only bug fixes, documentation improvements, and performance improvements. You can see the list of commits included since 1.5.3 here. We recommend anyone currently using 1.5.0, 1.5.1, 1.5.2, 1.5.3 upgrade to 1.5.4.

As a release candidate, 1.6.0-rc2 should not be considered production-ready. Rather, it’s intended to give users, especially package developers, a chance to try our their code with 1.6.0 prior to a full release. Check out the NEWS file to see what will be new in 1.6.0.

Note that 1.5 and 1.6 on Travis, AppVeyor, and Cirrus now refers to 1.5.4 and 1.6.0-rc2, respectively. This will be the case for GitHub Actions soon as well.

As always, let us know in the issue tracker if you run into any issues. Please note that any bugs you may encounter should be posted there rather than being discussed in this thread to ensure visibility to the developers.

Enjoy!

Just installed 1.6.0-rc2 on Win10, looks like it should be run with admin rights, filed an issue:

I think β€œshould” is a strong word. You probably don’t want to be running Julia as administrator.

I read this and my thought was β€œThey are already in Julia 1.6.2? How?!” Typos are one of the things that Computer Science can’t solve.

Is this first time in Julia history that there is double release of such kind?

Keep on working on milestone Julia 1.6. :+1:

Thanks, fixed this.

Nope. It just happens whenever multiple releases are ready to go at the same time. Not as exciting or momentous as it sounds, unfortunately.

is there a summary of what changed from 1.6.0-rc1 to 1.6.0-rc2?

Edit:
Just to clarify, since a lot of people seem to have clicked that link: There are no new features in 1.6.0-rc2 compared to the rc1, mostly just bug fixes. For new features in 1.6 since 1.5, see the NEWS file linked above:

I have a theory that Docker images appear after a full workday, like with rc1, so end of Monday would be a good guess, I think?

And if you want the long story 1.6 vs 1.0: Julia 1.6: what has changed since Julia 1.0?

I hate myself for asking the question, but do you have a sense for when the production-ready version 1.6.0 will be released?

We’re at the end stages of stabilization. There will be an RC3 imminently. Then another week or maybe two or three if any other show-stopper bugs are found.

After running sudo pacman -S p7zip everything works like a charm. Looks like Julia 1.6 assumes that 7z is present while in fact it is missing…

Thanks for the useful advice!

Julia bundles its own 7z which it should use:

How did you install Julia 1.6-RC3?
