Julia 1.12 feature freeze: Wednesday, January 8, 2025

We have set the feature freeze for Julia 1.12 to Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

If there are any feature PRs that you’d like to get into Julia 1.12, they’ll need to be merged prior to that date.

For context, the Julia 1.11 feature freeze was on Monday, February 12, 2024.

On the Julia blog Julia’s Release Process it is stated that a minor feature freeze is planned to happen every four months. Has this been changed or was the version 1.12 specially handled?

I don’t think we adhere to a strict four-month rule anymore. Generally, we start thinking about the feature freeze for 1.(x+1) after 1.x.0 has been released, and we decide the feature freeze date on a case-by-case basis for each minor release. One factor to consider is how long the release process for 1.x.0 took.

That specific section of the blog post should probably be edited to indicate that it is no longer up-to-date.

I think it’s also worth noting that sometimes there are particular “milestone” changes that the team wants to get into the next minor release, that are half-finished in the development version. While exercising patience is never easy :stuck_out_tongue: I do think it makes more sense to let them cook and then cut a release than rush it.
