I’m hiring a team at Capital One in New York for R&D efforts to bring state-of-the-art machine learning techniques to the retail financial services industry. Capital One’s goal is to Change Banking for Good, and in this position, you will be in a very real position to transform entire business processes by:
- driving cutting-edge research in the rapidly growing area of FAT/FATE/FATES ML (fair, accountable, transparent, ethical, safe, and secure machine learning),
- connecting the academic machine learning community to real and tangible challenges in the banking and financial services industry,
- advocating for fair and explainable machine learning within the business, and
- putting new tests, algorithms and processes into production together with business partners across the company.
What my team has been up to:
- Last weekend, I presented short position paper on why banks need fair and explainable machine learning at FATREC (at ACM RecSys workshop). Fairness and explainability are not only nice to have, but in many applications in banking, they are actually required by law!
- We also have a paper just accepted at the FAT* conference on statistical biases inherent to tests for inequity (will be posted on arXiv soon, pending revision and review).
- We are co-organizing the NIPS 2018 Workshop on Challenges and Opportunities for AI in Financial Services: the Impact of Fairness, Explainability, Accuracy, and Privacy, together with industry partners at JPMorgan and S&P Global, and academic partners at Columbia, Cornell, and CMU.

Department Summary:
The Card ML team is working to transform every corner of our business with machine learning. To accomplish this goal, we use the latest techniques in machine learning - deep learning, reinforcement learning, genetic algorithms, and natural language processing - and marry them with real-time streaming data in the cloud, to create best-in-class enterprise-scale ML products. We tackle a huge variety of business problems and work with vast quantities of data of every kind.
Role Summary:
As an ML Scientist at Capital One, you’ll be joining a research group that’s part of driving the next wave of disruption at a whole new scale, using the latest in distributed computing technologies and operating across billions and billions of customer transactions to unlock the big opportunities that help everyday people save money, time and difficulty in their financial lives. Emerging technologies ML scientists partner with both internal teams and university researchers to develop and apply new ways of solving critical business problems through the latest ML approaches. We research, experiment, and prototype implementations that have direct impact on our businesses and customers across a wide range of applications.
In this position, you will be responsible for designing and evaluating new machine learning applications, algorithms and systems, with a strong focus on rapid prototyping and proof-of-concepts. This requires a deep understanding of state-of-the-art techniques in a subfield of machine learning (e.g. deep learning, reinforcement learning, NLP, anomaly detection, time series) and relevant software frameworks. You will use your strong knowledge of scientific principles to suggest and research promising approaches. You will engage in team collaborations and have the ability to work in a demanding team-oriented environment to meet your goals. You are expected to maintain substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories, contribute regularly to scientific literature, and maintain strong relationships with key university researchers. You will develop relevant software and hardware technologies with the goal of converting these into products to fuel Capital One’s growth. You may also participate in the development of intellectual property.
The Ideal Candidate will be:

Technical. You are independent and can develop your own algorithms and experiments. You have hands-on experience developing ML solutions, from concept to production, and selecting the right tool for the job at hand. You know modern programming languages used for data science and machine learning, such as Julia, Python, or Scala.

Basic Qualifications:

Master’s Degree plus 3 years of experience in machine learning, or PhD

At least 1 year experience in machine learning prototype development

At least 3 years’ coding experience with open source programming languages such as R, Python, or Scala;

At least 1 year experience working with AWS, Azure, or similar cloud platform

At least 1 year experience developing enterprise-scale solutions that leverage one or more of the following: operations research, natural language processing, machine learning, deep learning, video/image analysis, or time-series analysis.
Preferred Qualifications:

PhD in a Machine Learning discipline

At least 2 years’ experience working with AWS, Azure, or similar cloud platform

Publication record demonstrating independent research
