Callback function modifying model parameter

I need to modify a parameter in an ODE problem in a callback. I found an example that does exactly what I want in here. (on the page search for PresetTimeCallback and it is the code including the first occurrence). Copied here for convenience:

rn = @reaction_network begin
    (k,1), X1 <--> X2
end
u0 = [:X1 => 10.0,:X2 => 0.0]
tspan = (0.0, 20.0)
p = [:k => 1.0]
oprob = ODEProblem(rn, u0, tspan, p)

condition = [5.0]
affect!(integrator) = integrator[:k] = 5.0
ps_cb = PresetTimeCallback(condition, affect!)

sol = solve(deepcopy(oprob); callback = ps_cb)
plot(sol)

When trying to run int in REPL it fails with the error message:

ERROR: LoadError: Parameter indexing is deprecated. Use `setp(sys, k)(integrator, 5.0)` to set parameter value.

The error seems to be in trying to modify the parameter value using integrator[:k].

If it is working for you it may mean my installation (or packages) are somehow corrupted.

Hi! Judging by your ModelingToolkit version you might be on the borderline for when .ps was implemented. What version of SymbolicIndexingInterface.jl and SciMLBase.jl are you using? Just pasting the output of ]st -m would be helpful.

I use Windows and couldn’t reproduce this crash.

No I am not, but t he error seems quite similar if not the same. It is triggered during the call to solve the ODEproblem.

It is strange - I completely removed Julia from my Windows 10 computer, delete all packages (.julia folder), installed a fresh copy of Julia 1.10.3 and try to install ModelingToolkit. It installs and precompiles 222/223 packages but it is stuck for 5 hours on the last one which happens to be the ModelingToolkit.

I know this is not a direct solution to your problem, but do you have access to WSL2 on your windows machine? WSL2 gives you a virtual linux environment – and personally I find developing/writing code in the Linux environment far more manageable.

Also, the ModellingToolkit library does take some time to precompile, but it’s certainly not hours.

I’ve gotten 6 reports of this segfault in the last 24 hours. I cannot reproduce it though. But all of the reports seem to be on Windows. I am seeing if the Julia dev team can help investigate. Could you try Julia v1.10.2 and see if it goes away? One variable that recently changed is the release of Julia v1.10.3 and we know there was an issue that effected StructuralIdentifiability.jl, maybe it’s more stochastic than we knew.

In Julia 1.10. 3 I installed ModelingToolkit first (latest version) then installed Catalyst got lots of warnings but when it finished and tried to run the example in this post I got the segfault.

I went back to 1.9.4 installed latest versions the packages and nor more segfault. I also figured out that instead of:

affect!(integrator) = integrator[:k] = 5.0

I can use

affect!(integrator) = setp(integrator.f.sys, :k)(integrator, 0.5)

which works assuming I include

using SymbolicIndexingInterface

None of the integrator.ps[:k] or integrator.ps[rn.k] work though.

Following your post I installed Julia 1.10.2. Added Catalyst which installed Catalyst v13.1.0 not the latest 13.5.1. Then added DifferentialEquations and run the same script and the segfault is back . Tried to update Catalyst then run the script and segfault is back.

Please see below two sessions one in 1.10.2 and the next in 1.9.4 with the package versions installed. I am truncating the error messages - keep the beginning and the end.
