What's new in v1.13?

Small question, what’s important new feature in v1.13?

As the freezing period has passed, I had a look at the NEWS file, but I couldn’t get the feeling of what - if any - “big” new feature is landing in the next upcoming release..

Of course, not all new releases need to bring new “big”, “cool” features… I am just asking in case I didn’t grasp the importance of stuff in the NEWS file..

My understanding is that there’s very little “big” stuff in 1.13, basically because the release cycle for 1.12 was so long that everything big either ended up going into 1.12, or was pushed back into into 1.14.

quite a long backlog of bugs and edge cases in integer arithmetic functions, as well around indexing behaviors of some array types has been cleaned up!

few to none of those are individually worthy of a NEWS entry but I find it to be a pretty satisfying aggregate.

What’s important differs for everyone I guess, but if you work in the REPL a lot you might like the fancy new history search which @tecosaur put together.

Pretty sure that’s 1.14 not 1.13

I thought I’d checked it on 1.13alpha2 before posting? (on phone now so can’t easily say whether my eyes deceived me)

There has to be some new feature, otherwise it would be a patch release, right?

Patch releases are very conservative. Even refactorings and straight-forward performance improvements are excluded.

I don’t think my eyes deceived me:

There’s quite a few Pkg improvements

new features mandate a new minor version but not vice versa

If you promote this as a release that focuses on bug fixes and edge cases rather than new features, you’d probably do more for adoption than if it were the other way around.

That is incorrect.
