Maybe just post a high-quality preprint on arXiv, and add a link to the published paper?

arXiv has more visibility than a link to a pdf in a git repository.
That is of course true, but my point when including the paper in the repository was that it is most useful to those who actually use the package. Visibility is already taken care of through the indexing data bases.
