Software developer and train nerd at chuuchuu

In short

  • What: Software developer and train nerd.
  • Company: chuuchuu, small startup, this would be our first hire.
  • Where: Fully remote within Europe.
  • When: Hopefully starting June, maybe later. See below.

The job

We are looking for a software developer to do the following:

  • Training a model (in Julia) to predict train delays and cancellations. Note that despite the hype towards neural networks, classic methods like random forests or Bayesian networks have been working better for us.
  • Building out our own routeplanner (in Julia) that integrates these prediction models. For fans of classic computer science who appreciate algorithms like A*.
  • Necessary data wrangling for these tasks. Currently we are collecting more than a million records per day into Postgres.

Note that we are a small startup, which means two things:

  • The result of your work will not be academic, it is a performant and production-ready system that can serve thousands of users everyday, across Europe. (Hopefully more in the future!)
  • Priorities can change. While Julia will be an important part of your job, we expect candidates to be pragmatic and willing to help out with other tasks if the need arises. These are mostly in Typescript, both frontend and backend.

About us

We are chuuchuu.com, the best train app in Europe. Our goal is to make train travel better, as it is the least polluting form of transport. We track train delays and help users pick the best route. We’re a small startup based in Antwerp (Belgium) and are looking for our first hire.

We intend to work fully remote with quarterly team gatherings to some European destination. Of course, we expect you to take the train there

About you

  • You can convince us that you possess the technical skills to do the job. We are looking for motivated candidates, our hard minimum requirements are minimal:
    • experience with Julia, SQL and at least one other programming language (Typescript/Javascript is a big plus!)
    • computer science and machine learning knowledge
  • You know and use your local train network. Apart from development work, everyone in our team is expected to bring a small piece of knowledge about their local train network. We are explicitly hiring from geographically diverse areas with this in mind.
  • You can take ownership of what you create and understand its value within the larger business context.
  • You communicate well and often. Bonus points if you had experience with fully remote jobs or communities before.
  • You are based in Europe.

What we offer

We are currently preparing for our next funding round, which will enable us to officially make this hire. While we don’t expect to finalize the hiring process before June, we are opening this conversation early to connect with great candidates and build relationships in advance.

Once funding is secured and we bring you on board, you can expect a competitive salary and stock options, along with the usual benefits of joining an early-stage, fully remote startup: high flexibility, a mission-driven team, and the chance to make a tangible impact on sustainable travel.
