Social media for JuliaCon

In light of doing a lot of social media for JuliaCon these days, I was wondering what platforms people actually/still use these days. My goal here is to escape the Julia echo chamber and to reach people outside of Discourse/Slack.

JuliaCon is active on Linkedin and Bluesky as well as using posts on Youtube. These are mostly my biases at play here. As an example, I used to be active on Twitter, and I left Facebook ~10 years ago and have never been active on Instagram.

Mastodon I am torn on, I use it socially a bit, but it always seems like a place where “announcement”/“advertisement” does not reach far, and the way federation works means that your posts are limited to your Homeserver.

I did a few posts about the CfP and the JuliaGPU mini and it saw little engagement (on fosstodon).

Mastodon’s algorithm treats everyone evenly. Unfortunately, the issue is that is not great for engagement, and for people like me who are used to doing posts that go viral… you realize this very fast because nothing ever goes viral. I mean, that’s kind of the point though, whereas something like Twitter will boost things that it knows grabs eyeballs in order to up engagement numbers which has its own issues. But… yeah… same thing here, I didn’t have posts going viral so I stopped caring about it so much  , and I noticed that everyone else who also have big followings did the same thing. So what’s left is a nice community of small posters, which is great in its own right, but it makes it very difficult if you want to be building and leading communities because in the modern age you are relying on the algorithm to send your message to a million people and Mastadon’s design specifically chooses to not do that.

But to the main point of the thread, Linkedin is the definitely the most active these days whether we like it or not. Bluesky is a distant second. Instagram and Tiktok hasn’t been good for this kind of science material at all, but I still throw things around there. Threads hasn’t really taken off but it’s growing. Discourse is a gem for us. What will happen to Twitter is anyone’s guess, but we know Facebook has fallen off a cliff.

I was just wondering whether it should be on the list - otherwise noone will know whether it’s active or moribund. (It had once been a growing community, until the official Julia server was mysteriously deleted. :slightly_smiling_face:)

I suspect changing the poll will lose results.

Yes, I expect there are more Reddit and Discord users than mastodoners.
