Plots.jl GKS failing

Hi

Having issues with the Plots.jl package after a Windows update. I receive error messages of the following form whenever I try to run any GUI command (e.g. scatter(1:10,1:10)):

This behaviour happens on my Windows machine, and identical behaviour occurs on an Ubuntu VM. This has only begun to occur after a Windows update, no changes have been made to the julia installation, environment, or anything. The Ubuntu VM has all the plugins (Qt5 etc.) recommended in other threads about this problem. Any help? I have an intuition that something is being blocked by a Windows firewall but I have no clue what that would be or how to fix it.

Just to confirm, you’ve run a package update for your Julia enviroment?

 pkg> up Plots

Otherwise, what does this give?

I also tried doing a

pkg> test GR

and all tests passed, but I still get the same exact error message dump when I try to use any plotting commands from the REPL

Why are you on Julia 1.4?

That’s just the version I got when I apt installed julia on the VM. The windows install is v1.7.1 and still produces the same exact error messages though

So the output you’re showing does not show the GR and GR jll versions which generate your error? Because both of these packages are pretty outdated on the output you’re showing.

This was addressed, so updating GR to v0.69.5 or above should help.

Sorry - my bad. Updated GR_jll to v0.70.0 and it worked.

Hmm. This seems to be an area that the GR.jl maintainers are actively working to address.
Can you start a fresh julia session, activate a temporary environment and add Plots?

] activate --temp
] add Plots

then try scatter(1:10,1:10).

Just tried this, in the temp environment it just hangs after I run the scatter command. No dialogue box or error output to the terminal, no plot window.

Ok. I think the solution is the one you marked, which is updating GR_jll to a version 0.70 or higher.
