# Vscode language server crashing

Hi,

for the last month or so, every time my Windows 10 computer gets rebooted the language server will not start when I try to open my Julia project.

I have tried reinstalling the Julia extension, Julia itself and VScode with lots of reboots but I can’t seem to solve the problem. Except the process of removing and reinstalling the Juia Extension allows the language server to start, until my next reboot.

I have tried my other Julia projects and experience the same issue. When I click on “Open Developer Tools” I can see the following output but I don’t have the skills to glean any understanding. When I click on Restart Extension Host the dialog reappears a few seconds later.

Can someone suggest something new I can try.

Check Output \> Julia Language Server in VS Code’s bottom pane. That should have some more info as to why exactly the LS process crashed.

When I look at the Output pane it is empty. From the dropdown there is nothing that mentions Julia. Log (Extension Host) is one option but I’m not sure if this is what you mean?

Hi, I am having a similar issue (that Julia VSCode language server is regularly crashing since a couple of days).

Downloading caches action shows many HTTP 404 errors and it crashes at a random package each time.

I have not been able to fix my issues and I hope that either the next version of Julia or the extension will fix my issues. The current beta of the extension does not resolve the issue. For now, every time I restart my machine, I have this issue, so I uninstall the extension, restart vscode then reinstall the extension. That fixes the problem every time. Removing Julia completely (according to my limited skill set) and starting over also did not solve the problem.

Fortunately, Julia is otherwise such a great experience.

I have started seeing a language server issue this morning (Mac M2, Ventura 13.4) in windows that worked fine yesterday. Output is below. The process zooms up to over 50GB of memory and then dies, always when loading Colors from the cache.

Try deleting `/Users/driscoll/Library/Application Support/Code/User/globalStorage/julialang.language-julia/symbolstorev5`.

I still have this issue. Have tried reinstalling vscode, Julia and the extension, nothing works to fix the problem. I used Julia for a few years before this problem suddenly appeared about 1 year ago.

My workaround is to remove the extension, close vscode, open vscode then reload the extension. This fixes the problem 100% of the time, until I close vscode. The next time I open vscode I have to go through the same process.

Win 10, Julia 1.9.3, ext 1.56.2

I don’t generally use a lot of extensions. Currently I’m using  
SQLite  
json for visual studio code  
Github Copilot  
Github Copilot chat  
Print.

I have just tried disabling all extensions except Julia and no difference.

breaking news…

When I disabled all the extensions, that seemed to trigger an update of the Julia ext to 1.60.2 and a vscode update to 1.84.2. On several restarts earlier today neither updated. Coincidence? I have no clue, it’s above my pay grade.

and now the server does not crash.

Wow, if this persists I will be very happy. Thanks for your suggestion.

Thx sransome for the update.

I tried uninstalled the entire extensions I have.  
At first, the errors seem to be lessen, but then it crashes again.

I will keep digging though, it seems like this can be fixed, and I probably did a dumb thing that led to this mess.

Mine is still crashing after uninstalling everything.

I am also only have 1 extension (Julia) running on the VS code.

I did. Still crashing through.

I have found that a freshly made repo does not have this problem.

How can files in your repo affect VScode extension?

When I was having the same problem (for 1 year till a few weeks ago) I was noticing the same thing with new repos. I uninstalled the extension, vscode, jula several times and nothing fixed it properly. the processes, of removing the extension, restarting vscode and reinstalling the extension always fixed the problem till the next time I restarted vscode. Unfortunately I don’t have the skills to work out how I created or fixed the problem.
