# Should I backup my PhD research?

Funny, at least I can’t access [www.borgbase.com](http://www.borgbase.com) 😂
I think redundancy is important. Purely relying on a commercial provider does not sound too clever, so having local backups is totally fine.
For myself, I got a encrypted backup at work and one at home (and another older one at a different place).

Another recommendation: [duplicati](https://www.duplicati.com/). It has a simple browser-based UI and supports many backends, including Onedrive and Google Drive. You might have a lot of space available on one of those via your university. All is encrypted and deduplicated of course.

And for the very simple backup from my computer to an external hard drive, I find [FreeFileSync](https://freefilesync.org/) works well.

Synchronization is not sufficient as a form of backup tho. There are many issues it does not protect you from (example: deleting a file and not noticing until after the next sync).
