I think a lot of people were impressed by Nick Highams talk at JuliaCon.  
No mention of Julia here, but I spotted to RA posts in his group if any bright sparks are interested.

Me, I struggle to use counting blocks so I will pass.  
(I was taught integer arithmetic in early school using wooden blocks which had different lengths, called counting blocks. Think wooden Legos without the sticky together bits)
