# Julia 1.8.3 and 1.9.0-alpha1 have been released

The Julia developers are pleased to announce two new releases: v1.8.3, the third patch release in the 1.8 stable series, and v1.9.0-alpha1, the first alpha version for the upcoming 1.9 stable series. You can download binaries at [https://julialang.org/downloads](https://julialang.org/downloads) in the “upcoming release” section for 1.9.0-alpha1 and the “current stable release” section for 1.8.3. Binaries are available for the same set of platforms for both, listed here by [support tier](https://julialang.org/downloads/#supported_platforms):

- Tier 1:
  - Linux x86\_64 (glibc)
  - Linux i686 (glibc)
  - macOS x86\_64 (Intel or Rosetta)
  - Window x86\_64

- Tier 2:
  - FreeBSD x86\_64
  - Linux AArch64 (glibc)
  - Linux x86\_64 (musl)
  - macOS AArch64 (M-series)
  - Windows i686

As a patch release, 1.8.3 contains no new features or breaking changes, only bug fixes, documentation improvements, and performance improvements. You can see the list of commits included since 1.8.2 [here](https://github.com/JuliaLang/julia/compare/v1.8.2...v1.8.3). We recommend that anyone currently using an earlier 1.8 version upgrade to 1.8.3.

As an alpha version, 1.9.0-alpha1 should **not** be considered production-ready. Rather, it’s intended to give users, especially package developers, a chance to try out their code with 1.9.0 prior to a full release. Check out the [NEWS file](https://github.com/JuliaLang/julia/blob/v1.9.0-alpha1/NEWS.md) to see what will be new in 1.9.0.

Note that `1.8` and `1.9` on [Travis](https://docs.travis-ci.com/user/languages/julia/), [AppVeyor](https://github.com/JuliaCI/Appveyor.jl), and [Cirrus](https://github.com/ararslan/CirrusCI.jl) now refer to 1.8.3 and 1.9.0-alpha1, respectively. On [GitHub Actions](https://github.com/julia-actions/setup-julia), use `1.8` for 1.8.3 but `~1.9.0-0` for 1.9.0-alpha1.
