but I still feel as though if
1[1] gives 1, then 1[1:1] should give the same result.

well, if you agree you shouldn’t be able to extract a vector out of a scalar, then it’s clear why 1[1:1] shouldn’t work.

Because [:] and [1:1] etc. always return a collection
