I have given up attempting to install any plotting packages, under any version of Julia. I have tried a variety, including Plots, Makie, GLMakie, Gaston, Unicode, etc. etc. I always get the same error: “Access Denied”. Other posts on this problem are of no help. I have tried installing on both my C: drive as well as network drive, with the same result. I have tried using a zipfile, I have tried completely removing Julia and reinstalling. All have been to no avail.

This problem is of “relatively” recent vintage. I had been able to install packages with no problems until a few weeks ago. Below is an MWE I tried installing Plots

I would like to use Julia, but currently I cannot. If anyone can help, it would be most appreciated.

The quickest suggestion is to upgrade to 1.10.1. One of the changes from 1.10.0 is related to managing artifacts on Windows and perhaps is related do your issue.

This means that a symbol or a dependency of `libfdk-aac-2.dll` could not be loaded. Unfortunately, Windows doesn’t bother to be more specific.

Not a Windows user, but in looking through your error message, the problem seems to involve this library: `libfdk-aac-2.dll`

Do you have new security settings on your machine? A new malware or virus detection app? Or did an admin uses change system security policies?

Some possibly relevant links:

- Search [this](https://pchelpforum.net/t/onlinevideoconrter-pop-ups.34336/) for “Access denied.”

> This is often caused by incorrect security settings in either the writer or requestor process

- [This](https://www.exedb.com/en/libfdk-aac-2---1130614-o1bmmcikg1lx2hh.shtml) suggests that the dll has an unknown MD5 and could be flagged as malware.

I have that dll too and it has no dependencies other system ones, so a dependency conflict is not the case here.
Try to reboot your machine.

Dear Joaquim:

Other users on this issue have mentioned rebooting their machine. Do not really want to (laziness?😒) , but I may have no alternative. “Unfortunately, Windows doesn’t bother to be more specific.” Darn Windows.

I know it was me who advanced that but in this case I don’t think that is right. As I said after, that dll has no external dependencies, so it doesn’t seem to be a symbols conflict. I also hate the “reboot” solution but sometimes …

I’ve seen a similar ptoblem for a student before, in that case, manually giving the current user execution permission for the problematic dll files worked.
But it was needed to do for several files before adding plots went through…

I agree with Knut, manually changing permissions should work. Also I’ve lately found deleting the file (rather than the whole .Julia folder) to work, which causes the artifact to be reinstalled.

My recommendation is to install the linux subsystem for windows.

> **[Install WSL](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/install)**

> Install Windows Subsystem for Linux with the command, wsl --install. Use a Bash terminal on your Windows machine run by your preferred Linux distribution - Ubuntu, Debian, SUSE, Kali, Fedora, Pengwin, Alpine, and more are available.

After this you can install julia into your new ubuntu subsystem. This makes a lot of headaches associated with microsoft inanities go away.

An accessibility suggestion: try to make your hyperlinks longer than `this`, it’s easier to click a link that is a number (\>1) of words long, plus it gives you an opportunity to expand on what they lead to. Discourse even does this automatically if you just paste the url raw.

Per @lmiq’s suggestion, I installed 1.10.1. No cigar. Worse outcome. I will install future stable versions of Julia as they become available. Perhaps someday this problem will be solved.
