# (For what) is NASA using Julia?

Continuing the discussion from [Suggestion: Keep release thread open](https://discourse.julialang.org/t/suggestion-keep-release-thread-open/139332/4): @langestefan asked this after the new Julia v1.13 release announcement [Julia v1.13.0 has been released](https://discourse.julialang.org/t/julia-v1-13-0-has-been-released/139326)

Since I’m also curious about that and have no idea: Is NASA using Julia? And if so, for what?

PS: The “reply in new thread” feature automatically suggests the same category (Meta Discussion) for the new topic. Not sure if it fits though, but I’m also not sure if it’s completely Offtopic since it _is_ a question about Julia 🤔

There are several of us in my group who use it pretty extensively. We have a flight mechanics simulation, for example: [Genesis Flight Mechanics Simulation and Trajectory Design Tool v0.4.1(MSC-27061-1) | NASA Software Catalog](https://software.nasa.gov/software/MSC-27061-1). And we also do a lot of work with convex optimization in Julia.

There was a talk at JuliaCon this year from a different group: [Building Production Desktop GUIs in Julia at NASA with Dear ImGui and Mirage.jl :: JuliaCon 2026 :: pretalx](https://pretalx.com/juliacon-2026/talk/CXRHSP/)
